Why do Africans think every injury can be cured by pressing it with a hot cloth?

My sister sprained her ankle and my mom is pressing her ankle with cloth soaked with boiling water. Doesn’t she understand that it will have little to no effect? In fact it can make it even worse. I swear my parents are so bush. I can’t deal with this nonsense.
